What makes New Mexico paychecks different

New Mexico rebuilt its brackets for 2025 to shift the burden upward: six rates now run from 1.5% on the first $5,500 of taxable income to 5.9% above $210,000 for a single filer, with most wage earners landing in the 4.7% or 4.9% bands. Because the state starts from federal taxable income, the full $16,100 federal standard deduction applies. Low- and middle-income households also qualify for a refundable Low Income Comprehensive Tax Rebate and a state child tax credit.

No city or county in New Mexico taxes wages, and the state has no reciprocity agreements, so El Paso residents who work in Las Cruces or Santa Teresa file a nonresident New Mexico return. Nothing is withheld for state paid leave or disability. Social Security is exempt for single filers with income under $100,000 and joint filers under $150,000, and taxable above that.

Instead of a sales tax New Mexico imposes a gross receipts tax on businesses, which is almost always passed through to customers and is charged on services as well as goods. The state rate is 4.875% and combined rates in Albuquerque and Santa Fe run near 8%. Oil and gas production in the Permian Basin has filled the state's coffers in recent years, which financed the 2025 bracket changes and a series of rebates.
