What makes California paychecks different

California has the steepest income tax schedule in the country: ten brackets from 1% to 12.3%, plus a 1% mental health services surtax on taxable income over $1 million, for an all-in top rate of 13.3%. Middle incomes are not spared. A single filer crosses into the 9.3% bracket at about $72,700 of taxable income, so a $100,000 earner already pays 9.3 cents on each extra dollar. The standard deduction is small ($5,540 single, $11,080 joint) and the personal exemption is a $153 credit rather than a deduction.

The line that surprises new arrivals is SDI. California's State Disability Insurance, which also funds Paid Family Leave, is withheld from every paycheck at 1.3% in 2026, up from 1.2% in 2025, and since 2024 there has been no wage ceiling. A $250,000 earner pays $3,250 a year into SDI. Combined with the top income tax bracket that puts California's marginal rate on wages at 14.6%. This calculator includes SDI in the state total.

A few smaller quirks matter for planning. California does not recognize Health Savings Accounts, so HSA contributions that are pre-tax federally are taxed by the state. There are no city or county income taxes on wages (San Francisco's payroll tax falls on employers), and California has no reciprocity agreements, so out-of-state residents who work in California owe California tax on those days.

Updated for 2026: The SDI withholding rate rose from 1.2% to 1.3% for 2026, still with no wage cap, so every California worker pays a little more into disability and paid family leave this year.
