What makes Rhode Island paychecks different
Rhode Island uses three brackets, 3.75% on taxable income up to $82,050, 4.75% up to $186,450 and 5.99% above, with the same thresholds for single and joint filers. The standard deduction is $11,200 single and $22,400 joint and the personal exemption is $5,250 per person, but both phase out for filers with income above about $261,000 and vanish entirely past $290,800, so high earners effectively pay on every dollar. Rhode Island began exempting a portion of pension and 401(k) income for retirees at full Social Security age in 2017.
The state runs the oldest disability insurance program in the country. Temporary Disability Insurance (which also funds Temporary Caregiver Insurance) is withheld from employees at 1.1% of the first $100,000 of wages in 2026, down from 1.3% of the first $89,200 in 2025, for a maximum of $1,100 a year. Employers contribute nothing. The deduction is not in the state figure above; on $60,000 it is $660.
No Rhode Island city or town taxes wages, and the state has no reciprocity agreements, so residents who commute to Boston or Attleboro pay Massachusetts first and claim a credit at home. Sales tax is a flat 7% with no local rates, one of the highest state-level rates, and clothing under $250 is exempt.
Updated for 2026: Rhode Island's TDI rate fell to 1.1% for 2026 while the taxable wage base rose to $100,000, so the maximum annual employee contribution is $1,100.
