What makes Maine paychecks different
Maine's income tax starts high and stays there: the lowest bracket is 5.8%, the middle bracket is 6.75% from about $27,400 of taxable income, and the top 7.15% rate begins at roughly $64,850 for a single filer. The standard deduction ($8,350 single, $16,700 joint) mirrors the pre-2018 federal amount because Maine conforms to an older version of the federal code, and it phases out entirely between $100,000 and $175,000 of income for single filers. A $5,300 personal exemption helps at the low end.
Maine launched one of the newest paid-leave programs in the country. Premiums began on January 1, 2025 at 1% of wages for employers with 15 or more workers, with up to 0.5% deducted from employees (smaller employers pay 0.5% and may pass all of it through). Benefits started flowing on May 1, 2026, up to 12 weeks for medical, family, parental and safe leave. The deduction is not part of the state income tax figure shown here.
There are no municipal income taxes in Maine and no reciprocity agreements; New Hampshire residents who work in Portland or Kittery owe Maine tax on those wages, while Maine residents working in New Hampshire owe Maine tax on everything. Sales tax is 5.5% statewide with no local rates.
Updated for 2026: Maine Paid Family and Medical Leave began paying benefits on May 1, 2026, funded by the up-to-0.5% employee premium that has been withheld since January 2025.
