What makes South Carolina paychecks different

The brackets on this page (0% to about $3,640, 3% to $18,230 and 6% above) are the schedule South Carolina published for the start of 2026, when its top rate had been temporarily trimmed from 6.2% to 6% by the 2025 budget. That schedule did not survive the legislative session. Act 110 of 2026, signed on March 30, 2026 and retroactive to January 1, replaced the three brackets with two: 1.99% on taxable income under $30,000 and 5.21% above, with a $966 offset so the math is continuous. Withholding tables were updated later in the year.

The same act created a new South Carolina Income Adjusted Deduction, decoupled the state from some federal deductions, adjusted the state earned income credit, and set revenue triggers that can keep lowering the top rate until it reaches 1.99%. Because of the change, most South Carolinians will owe less for 2026 than the estimate above suggests, though how much less depends on how the new deduction interacts with income. The $8,350 standard deduction shown here reflects pre-2026 conformity rules.

No county or city in South Carolina taxes wages, there are no reciprocity agreements, and nothing is withheld for state paid leave or disability. Social Security is exempt, retirees 65 and older can deduct up to $10,000 of other retirement income, and owner-occupied homes are assessed at just 4% of value for property tax.

Updated for 2026: Act 110 of 2026 (signed March 30, 2026, retroactive to January 1) replaced South Carolina's three brackets with 1.99% under $30,000 and 5.21% above, so actual 2026 tax will differ from the 0% / 3% / 6% schedule shown here.
